My first foray into photography began during the 1970’s when I tinkered with a new Minolta SLR camera creating and developing black and white photos. Interest waned, but rekindled as my wife Mary and I caught the travel bug early in the 2000’s
Early on my goal was to capture vistas and experiences and to share those memories with friends and family. It was clear that the quality of my images was not on par with my vivid (but fading) memories.
I began to spend more time in practice, reading and study to see if I could create more realistic and resonant images. I noticed that a key ingredient of success in my favorites was the magic of natural lighting. If the light could be caught and emphasized in the same dramatic way in which the original scene was illuminated, then I was able to convey a more emotional story.
With time, the focus of our travels shifted more toward wilder places with abundant and inspiring natural wildlife photography opportunities. My most powerful images seemed to capture action, interaction with the environment, or typical daily activities that tied the animal to their surroundings. It seemed important to flesh out a composition in order to tell a compelling story.
I have been most hesitant and intimidated by images including people, but more recently I have attempted to add them to my portfolio. I have approached people with the same goals as my wildlife photos. I want to explain the subject’s place in their environment and attempt to display or share their emotions.
I hope that I am making progress with my photography hobby—only time will tell for certain. In the meantime I hope that you enjoy sharing in my travels. I appreciate any comment or feedback. Contact me at lelohman@gmail.com. Make inquiries about printed images at the same address.
Finally, my sincere thanks to my wife Mary who has planned and accompanied me on multiple amazing journeys. Her patience as I have slowed down many a daily expedition has not gone unnoticed by me and other travel partners!
